An anal cleansing douche – often called an enema bulb – is a simple, hand-held hygiene device designed to gently flush the rectum with water. It typically consists of two main parts:
1. The Bulb: A soft, squeezable rubber reservoir that holds water. It’s teardrop-shaped to fit comfortably in the hand and holds approximately 225ml. The bulb creates pressure to deliver water when squeezed.
2. The Nozzle: the slender, narrow, smooth tip is made of plastic. The nozzle is inserted into the rectum to expel water for the purpose of flushing the lower bowel. The nozzle is detachable for cleaning.
The design prioritises ease of use, comfort, and hygiene, making it a practical tool for occasional personal cleansing.
Using a douche to clean the anus can be part of personal hygiene or preparation for certain activities. Here’s a clear and respectful step-by-step guide on how to do it safely:
How to Use a Douche to Clean the Anus
1. Choose the Right Douche:
• Use a bulb-style douche with a soft, flexible nozzle.
• Fill it with lukewarm water only – not hot, cold, or mixed with soap or other substances (which can irritate the sensitive lining of the rectum).
2. Prepare the Environment:
• Do this in a clean bathroom, ideally near or in the shower or bathtub.
• Keep a towel, some lubricant (water-based), and toilet access nearby.
3. Fill the Bulb:
• Squeeze the bulb to push out air, then submerge the tip in a cup or bowl of lukewarm water and release it to draw the water in.
• Test the temperature on your wrist – it should feel neutral or slightly warm.
4. Apply Lubricant:
• Lubricate the nozzle of the douche and the anus to prevent discomfort.
5. Insert the Nozzle Gently:
• In a comfortable position (squatting, lying on your side, or standing with one leg raised), gently insert the nozzle 1–2 inches into the anus.
• Go slowly – if there’s any pain, stop.
6. Squeeze the Bulb:
• Slowly squeeze to release the water into your rectum.
• You may feel a slight pressure or urge to release.
7. Hold Briefly, Then Expel:
• Wait a few seconds (10–30 seconds), then move to the toilet and allow the water and any waste to come out.
• Repeat the process 2–3 times max or until the water runs mostly clear.
8. Clean Up:
• Rinse the bulb and nozzle thoroughly with warm, soapy water.
• Let it dry completely before storing.
• Wash your hands and the area gently.
Important Safety Tips:
• Do not overdo it. Frequent douching can irritate or dry out the rectum and disrupt natural bacteria.
• Use only clean water. Avoid soaps, oils, or harsh additives.
• Stop if it hurts or if you experience bleeding or discomfort.
Douche bulb holds a maximum of 224ml fluid.
